Today's market

April 22, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. EDT

Michael P. Reinking, CFA
Sr. Market Strategist

Last week was another rough week for US equity markets with the S&P 500 closing down 3%, the worst week since March 2023 and the third consecutive weekly decline since the start of the quarter. The reasons cited for last week’s weakness were continued tensions in the Middle East, yields hovering around YTD highs and earnings failing to live up to high expectations following a relentless five-month rally. That last statement goes to the crux of the matter as the weakness seemed to be driven by risk reduction after positioning had gotten stretched. One sign of that distributive behavior was the fact that the S&P 500 opened higher in four of five sessions only to close lower (and barely missed this mark again on Friday). That dynamic happening in four consecutive session is something seen less than a handful of times going back to 2000.
